In this course we are going to practice using APA format to report statistics. The rules for reporting statistics have not changed from APA 6 (the only change I've seen are the rules for Titles for Figures). There are some changes in referencing, mostly for the better. Do attend a webinar from the Writing Center to learn about these changes.

The 6th edition of the APA manual was not good. But the 7th edition is very good, so consider yourself fortunate that you will write your dissertation under APA 7. Get a copy of the 7th edition ASAP. It is very informative about things you will be interested in, like writing in a scholarly voice. It is well organized, and is pitched to students (as well as professionals preparing manuscripts for publication).

For reporting statistics, especially see Reporting Standards for Quantitative Research pg 77, Statistical and Mathematical Copy pg 181, and chapter 7 Tables and Figures.

In weeks 2 thru 9, there are data analysis assignments. Please follow this format for each of these assignments

Title page (NO RUNNING HEAD, NO ABSTRACT)

Text reporting the research question, which data set was used, how the analysis was done, results of any tests of assumptions, the results reported in APA format, brief interpretation of findings. I am a stickler for APA format. There are examples of what the results should look like for each assigned analysis in the Warner textbook. This does not have to be longer than 2 pages.

appending SPSS output and syntax to data analysis assignments.docx

The aim of each assignment is not only to correctly conduct the analysis, but also to practice and learn the established form for writing up results. A few general rules:

Latin statistical symbols (e.g., N, M, SD, t, p) should be in italics.

There should be a space on each side of equals (and inequality) signs.

Never say Sig in the writeup. The correct symbol is p.

Always report the exact p value. EXCEPTION: If SPSS says Sig is .000, write p < .001 (never say p is .000). The reason: p can be a very small number which might require more than 3 decimal places to express, but p is never zero. If you say p is .000, you are saying p is zero (and that is incorrect).

When you are looking at the example tables in Warner, note that the tables are in APA format (and SPSS output is not). If you refer to tables in your results section, ensure the table is in APA format. [source link omitted]

(To be clear, don't put all of your SPSS output in APA form, only any table you refer to in your results section. You should not need more than 1 or 2 tables; use the Warner examples as a guide to what might be appropriate.)

The week 2 instructions say that this is the required reading:

Frankfort-Nachmias, C., & Leon-Guerrero, A. (2018). Social statistics for a diverse society (8th ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.

Chapter 12, “Regression and Correlation” (pp. 325-371) (previously read in Week 9 of RSCH 8210)

If you have this book, fine, but it isn't required. You can read about Multiple Regression in Chapter 11 of the text for this course, which is Applied Statistics, 2nd edition, by Rebecca Warner. The Warner book is very good.

For those of you who took the first Quantitative Methods course at Walden, you probably recognize some of these datasets. They are from the same surveys, but not exactly the same, so be sure to use these files for your assignments. Let me know if you have any difficulty downloading the data files.

The authors of this course didn't provide any information about the datasets. I found these links to external websites where you can read about the studies. Be sure that you download the data file from this announcement, not from the external website.
