Week 1 discussion
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Suppose you were using an online job search engine to investigate potential career opportunities for Academic Nurse Educators or NPD Practitioners. If you actually typed “Academic Nurse Educator” or “Nursing Professional Development Practitioner” into a job search engine, you might be amazed by the number of different job titles that come up in the results. In fact, in most cases, you would not see the exact titles “Academic Nurse Educator” or “Nursing Professional Development Practitioner” anywhere in the postings.Examining the job postings more closely, you would also observe a great deal of variation in the roles and responsibilities associated with positions within each specialty.
Given the variety of job titles and roles you would find when doing an Internet search for the titles of Academic Nurse Educator and Nursing Professional Development Practitioner, it stands to reason that the same variability exists in your workplace.
For this Discussion, you will search your professional practice to define the role of the Academic Nurse Educator or the NPD Practitioner. You will then consider why it is important to standardize roles and titles for a specialty.

Week 5 discussion
Suppose you checked the statistics for a hospital in your area and found that it had a significantly higher rate of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) than the national average. Clearly, a problem exists and improvements must be made, but how do we know what needs to be done? As you know, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) (n.d.) requires annual training on bloodborne-pathogen exposure prevention.Does the training need to be updated to ensure that nurses and other healthcare workers are using the most current evidence-based procedures in aseptic care? Are there issues with monitoring of HAIs, and, if so, how would they be addressed through education?
For this Discussion, you will use the Hospital Compare website to examine statistics regarding patient satisfaction, timeliness and effectiveness of care, complications and deaths, unplanned hospital visits, and other indicators of quality of care. Using this data, you will identify an area for improvement. You will examine approaches to analyzing the practice gap to determine whether learning needs can be identified to address the gap. Of course, there is much more to conducting a gap analysis than looking at numbers. Additional sources of data are needed to determine whether the practice gap you identified can be addressed through education, or if another approach is needed.

To prepare:
Review the Resources related to gap analysis/learning needs assessment.
Access the Hospital Compare website found in this week’s Resources and complete the following:
Search for a hospital nearest to you. Select “Add to Compare” and then select “Compare now.”
Navigate through the information presented in each tab and compare the information for your selected hospital to the state and national averages.
Based on the information you find, identify an area for improvement.
BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 5
Based on your findings, post a brief description of the hospital you chose (note: anonymity will be important, so you might include a description similar to the following: A medium-sized hospital, 150 beds, located in Midwest region of the United States). Next, explain how you would analyze the gap, or area for improvement, to identify learning needs. Include additional sources of information/data needed from the hospital to complete the gap analysis (e.g., staff interviews, data from infection-control nurses, etc.).
Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.
BY DAY 6 OF WEEK 5
Sometimes, no learning needs can be identified to address a practice gap. This situation may occur when a problem is the result of a process or system issue, rather than a learning need. For example, an infection control issue related to improper handwashing is unlikely due to a lack of knowledge of skill.
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by identifying a possible process or system issue that could be at the root of the problem they have presented.
Note: For this Discussion, you are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleagues' postings. Week 5 assignment
Whether teaching preschoolers their ABCs or advanced practice nurses a new concept in patient care, education is always designed to fulfill a need or change a behavior to get to a desired state. In professional nursing practice, learning is designed to address a practice gap or correct a problem. Before you can develop outcomes that inform professional development activities for practicing nurses, you first have to know what that problem is. Thus, the first step of the educational design process for the NPD Practitioner is assessment of a practice gap. The second step is identification of learning needs to address the practice gap. As mentioned earlier, learning needs in academic settings are defined by internal and external factors influencing the curriculum and will be explored further in another course.
The third step of the educational design process for all nurse educators is developing learning outcomes based on learning needs. We then articulate the path to achieving these learning outcomes by identifying cognitive, behavioral, and emotional tasks in the form of learning objectives. These learning objectives provide a structure for planning educational activities and inform students of what they will actually be doing.
Learning outcomes and objectives must be measurable because they serve as the basis for developing evaluations of learning, the final step of the educational design process. While the actual methods of evaluating learning for nursing students and practicing nurses often differs, approaches to identifying appropriate evaluations are similar. Evaluations must align to learning objectives or learning outcomes for a learning experience to be cohesive.
For this Module 3 Assignment, you will assume the role of the Nursing Professional Development Practitioner for all three stages of the educational design process. The assignment consists of three parts, which you will complete over the next 3 weeks. Below are the details of each part of the Module 3 Assignment. For this week, you will complete Part 1.

Explain your approach to identifying the learning need based on the practice gap.
Use your Resources to support your explanations. Use proper APA formatting and references.
Complete this part of the assignment in Week 5. You will submit Part 1 of your Assignment along with Part 2 and Part 3 in Week 7 in one cohesive paper.
Week 6 discussion
You value these sorts of challenges, so you are confident that a positive attitude will enable you to forge ahead. The domains of learning are similar to the considerations a hiker must take when figuring out how they will get to their destination. While learning involves some degree of memorization, there is much more to the process that just building a database of facts within our heads. We apply various modes of thinking, practice skills that require motor coordination, and develop emotions and attitudes about learning. These aspects of learning are explained by the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains of learning, respectively.
Thus, when developing learning outcomes and objectives as a nurse educator, you must consider all of the domains of learning to provide a complete picture of how you will address a learning outcome or objective. For this discussion, you will analyze the anatomy of a learning objective with respect to the domains of learning and practice writing a learning outcome and learning objectives based on the learning needs you identified in last week’s gap analysis.

Week 7 discussion
KIRKPATRICK’S FOUR LEVELS OF EVALUATION
Think about a professional development program you participated in as practicing nurse. Did you find the training to be engaging? What new knowledge and skills did you acquire? More importantly, were you able to successfully apply these new skills on the job and did they lead to successful outcomes for your organization and your patients? Kirkpatrick’s four levels of evaluation serve as a model for guiding nurse educators in developing evaluations that provide answers to these questions.
For this Discussion, you will revisit the learning outcome and objectives you created in Part 2 to serve as the basis for developing evaluation approaches for your students. When developing evaluations, there are many things to consider. First, your evaluations must align to the learning outcome and objectives you created. This requires a close examination of the wording of your outcome and objectives to ensure they are well defined and measurable. If it’s not clear how the student should be evaluated, you may need to consider further refinement to your outcomes and objectives before moving on.
Kirkpatrick’s four levels of evaluation are another important consideration of educational design. Their purpose is to measure the effectiveness of professional development at the student and organizational level, with each level offering a more precise measure. For our purposes, we will just consider Kirkpatrick’s levels of evaluations at the individual student level. For this Discussion, you will analyze evaluation approaches across Kirkpatrick’s four levels and ensure alignment of evaluations to learning outcomes and objectives. This Discussion will give you an opportunity to receive feedback from your colleagues in preparation for your Module 3 Assignment.

Week 9
Consider all of the factors involved in defining the specialty of nursing professional development. NPD Practitioners influence the healthcare profession by identifying opportunities for improvement and targeting learners across a variety of professions and settings. Who are these learners, and how does the NPD Practitioner collaborate with them to address clinical problems and improve nursing practice and patient care as a whole? The answer to this question depends on the clinical problem that needs to be solved or the improvement that needs to be made. It can be further explained through the application of the NPD Practice Model

Week 10 assignment
magine you are an Academic Clinical Nurse Educator preparing for your student nurses’ clinical rotations. This is an exciting time for your students, as they now have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom with actual patients! It’s a busy time for you, though, because their success is dependent on your ability to plan clinical experiences for each of your student nurses that enable them to develop the skills they need to be successful practicing nurses in the future. This means considering the individual learning needs of each of your student nurses and matching them to an appropriate patient on the unit.
For your Module 6 Assignment, you will first evaluate assignments and activities for student nurses in clinical settings to ensure alignment to clinical experience objectives. You will also examine how core competencies of Clinical Nurse Educators are addressed in planning clinical experiences for student nurses. Finally, you will explore how Clinical Nurse Educators facilitate communication and bridge ethical and legal requirements between the academic institution and the clinical setting.

See the “Student Nurse Profiles and List of Specialty Areas” document found in the Resources for this week. Review the Student Nurse Profile assigned to you. Note: Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your Student Nurse Profile assignment.
Review the List of Specialty Areas found in this week’s Resources and consider the different specialty areas or units. Once you review the List of Specialty Areas, select a specialty area to match your assigned Student Nurse Profile by developing a patient profile for a patient that you might encounter on this unit.
Create a specific objective for managing care for the patient.

Week 11 discussion
Consider your results from the Clifton Strengths Finder, a self-assessment of leadership traits that you took in a previous course. Recall that the Clifton Strengths Finder enabled you to identify your leadership strengths in terms of how you work with information, how you make things happen, how you influence others, and how you build and nurture strong relationships.
As a future nurse educator, your ability to leverage leadership strengths is essential to effecting change in academic and practice settings.
You must also understand the phases of project management as they relate to change initiatives in nursing education and nursing professional development, so you know how to best insert yourself into each step of the process. For example, if the Clifton Strengths Finder identifies you as a futuristic thinker, you will likely have a great deal to contribute during the initiation and planning phases of a change initiative.
For this week’s Discussion, you will examine project management processes as they relate to a change initiative that took place in your current or past workplace. You will also examine your own leadership strengths and discuss how you can apply them to support the change initiative.
