Nurse: Hi Sally. Welcome for the education segment.
Patient: Thank you. Teach me about gestational diabetes.
Nurse: It is marked by the presence of too much glucose in blood above the normal level. The cause of the disease is thought to be due to lack of physical exercises and poor dietary intake. In this case, sedentary life style contributes to risk factors including development of overweight and subsequent insulin resistance.
Patient: what is the best way to manage it?
Nurse: We will work together and develop an exercise regimen and safe dietary plans for you. I will also show you how to carry out self-testing for glucose level in blood and calculation of appropriate insulin injections based on the findings.
Patient: do I have to use the drugs?
Nurse: It is advisable that to adhere to the treatment plan to ensure safety for you and the baby. There is risk of giving birth to a baby that is too big if the blood level of glucose stays too high. Your health will also be at risk if you fail to manage the current hyperglycemia appropriately.
Patient: thank you. I can’t wait to work with you on the appropriate dietary adjustment and exercises.
Nurse: You are welcome. Diet has to be restricted to 50% fresh vegetables while the rest is divided into calorie and protein intake. We will calculate appropriate daily intake in terms of quantity based on the needs both you and the baby. As for exercises, walking to and from work will work great for you.
